The Early Career Doctoral Student Academic Careers Workshop (EC-ACW) is an early career development workshop specifically designed for doctoral students in the early stages of their Ph.D. programs in computing. Now entering its second year, EC-ACW exposes participants to the benefits of pursuing academic careers.

This workshop targets students completing the first, second, or third year of their doctoral programs in computing at U.S. institutions.  

Workshop Focus and Learning Goals

The EC-ACW is structured to introduce participants to essential elements of an academic pathway while also addressing the practical, personal, and professional skills needed to thrive. Core topics covered include:

  • Navigating the academic career ladder
  • The power of networking and research collaborations
  • Work-life balance and self-care in academia
  • Understanding expectations for faculty candidates
  • The art of technical storytelling and presenting your research
  • How to build and refine your teaching portfolio

These sessions are led by experienced faculty and academic leaders.

Who Should Attend

EC-ACW targets early career doctoral students from the following underrepresented communities in computing:

  • Native Americans / Indigenous
  • Hispanics / Latinx 
  • People with Disabilities
